Muchas gracias MMF.

Usually as I don't have breakfast at home except on weekends the bread last a few days and I only need to bake one bread per week.  This week we had two bank holidays in Spain and I have been having breakfast here at home.  So this morning I already finished the one I baked on Sunday.

This I put together yesterday night and I baked this morning.  Ingredients are:  200 gr. leaven or sourdough (brown rye), 100 gr. white rye flour, 150 gr Hovis Granary flour, 250 gr. Hovis strong white bread flour, 10 gr salt and 370 gr. water.

I am very happy with this bread.  I have been trying a new way of baking it that a friend told me a while back and I can see it is working.  It is delicious.

Crochet: Manta a Cuadros (Progresos 3ª parte)

¿Qué me queda?

Today my plan was to bake some bread, have breakfast and go for a walk because the day was really nice.  Didn't happen.

Instead I finished putting together all crochet squares. Yesterday I did nine more with the yarn left so that I could finish another line and this morning I did white edge and crochet together a line of 10, another of 11 and both of them to the blanket.  I finished really late.  No walk for me.  But as you can imagine I am happy.  The blanket is not finish but I can see the end of it.  I still need to put the white edge around with all white Rico yarn I have left and I also need to take care of all those loose ends.

I would like to finish it for Christmas or for the 6th of January but we will see as I have to finish another to present-proyects I have at the moment. But today I am really happy.

  • Last Breath  de Rachel Caine

These are the books I’ve read in November.

Last Breath is the 11th in the Morganville saga by Rachel Caine.  I’ve discovered the first book “Glass House” in 2008 and it is one of my favorite sagas.  Although this saga is intended for young adults and the characters most of them are (or look) under 30 years old, it is really fun to read.  When a saga is this long there are always book you like better than others. This book is not one of my favorite and there were a few things that happened in the book that I didn’t agree with.  But anyway truth is that once I started reading it was hard to put the book down and I am looking forward to reading the next installment.

16 Lighthouse Road by Debbie Macomber is the first one I read of this author.  I have seen lots of good reviews in Amazon and I was looking forward to reading it.  I was not disappointed.  It is really nice to read this kind of stories.

A Noble Radiance is the seventh book of detective Brunetti by Donna Leon.  I’ve always like detective stories and my favorite has been always Sherlock Holmes.  These novels by Donna Leon are even more interesting as they take place in Venezia and describe very well how Italians are and live.

First bread is for the weekend (we have already eaten it).  Second bread is for this week.  The difference between both is that the first one was made with half ingredients.  But ingredients are the same in both breads:  200 gr. leaven, 500 white strong flour (Hovis), 350 gr water and 10 gr. salt.  I mixed but not knead.  I left the dough in the kitchen at room temperature the whole night.  The following morning I shaped and baked it.

Londres: El Hotel

Me explico.

Guoman Charing Cross London

We've been going to this hotel for more than ten years.  And right now I cannot recommend it.

The main reason I still go there is because I travel with my sister and I need a place that is ok to go out and to come back at any time.  (Security reasons)

The second reason is because it is well situated and you can walk almost to any place.  In fact we only took the bus a couple of times but for the most part you don't need it.

Why I don't recommend it:

It is very expensive

You don't get more because it is expensive.  For example, the amenities in the bathroom were three small bottles (gel, champoo and body milk) and a small bar of soap for the two of us.  And nothing else.  In any other hotels I stayed I get more.  We were lucky because the third day they put another bottle of gel.

The worst part for me it is that you cannot rest well.  We had a problem with a Christmas Party in the hotel.  We could hear the music in our room as it filter through the bathroom and through the windows.  I complaint and they told me that they would tell the DJ to lower the music.  The party ended at 1:00 a.m on a Thursday night.  Some years ago we had the same problem with a party that ended at 3:00 a.m (it was a Saturday).  I think this is common practice in this hotel so now you know.

There is also lot of noise coming from the street.  I know this is not the hotel fault but in other hotels I stayed when you close the window you don't hear anything at all.  Anyway this wouldn't be a problem at all except for the time we had a musician in the street playing the same three songs over and over until 12 o'clock.

Nowadays when you leave a hotel you are asked to fill a survey about quality in that hotel.  Sometimes you can find such survey in the room.  Not here.  Apparentley they are not interested in their guest's opinions.

Now, if you want to stay there, these are my recommendations:

  • Avoid rooms in second floor, and in the third floor from number 300 - 308.
  • When you are given the room, look that the wc runs well and that it doesn't make much noise at all.  Sometimes they do.
  • If you are not happy with the room given and cannot get another one, ask for an upgrade, a junior is 35 pounds per room and night.

There are other hotels in London.  I have stayed at Melia White House once.  The rooms are not very big but the breakfast is one of the best I have in all hotels I visit in my life (and I visited quite a few).  Royal National is a very economic hotel.  It is quite basic but is clean.  It is nearn Russell Square.  And then, there are lots of bed and breakfast.  When I was a student I stayed in few of them, and sometimes I had to share bathroom.  Now, I think I am a bit to old to be again in one sharing the bathroom.

Well, that's all about our hotel.  I don't like having to make this kind of review.  When we travel and stay in a hotel we are the kind of people to leave everything really tidy every single day, we thanks for the service and we try to be as polite as it gets.  What feels wrong is that we are being treated this way after so many years.   Friends and collegues at work are always asking me about where I stay in London so this is a way of telling them and telling anyone what to expect.

Londres, 28 Nov - 2 Dic (2011)

No comimos.

Hogar duce hogar.

This is our annual trip to London.  My sister and I have been making this trip for more than 10 years.  More  or less in the same dates that is between the middle of November to the begining of December.

28 November

As always we flew with Easyjet to Gatwick with a direct flight from Malaga.  This time we were really lucky and didnt' have any troubles with the plane.  No delays at all.  Once we arrived to Gatwick we took the train to London.  We don't take the Gatwick Express, instead we have learnt over the years to take the train (First Capital Connect direction Bedford) to London Bridge where we change trains and take the one going to London Charing Cross Station (usually Southerneastern).  It takes about 45 minutes from Gatwick Airport to reach London Charing Cross and we paid 25 pounds (more or less 30 €) for the return ticket:  Gatwick Airport to all London Terminals.  For us is the most convienient way to get to our hotel.

Our hotel.  We stayed in Guoman Charing Cross Hotel.  This I will explain in more detail in another post.  Although I've been going there for ten years I am afraid I cannot recommend it.

After checking in and leaving our luggage in our hotel room, we first have a late lunch or a early dinner in front of the hote in Pizza Express.  This is one of the nice things about London, you can eat at anytime.

When we were finish we went for a walk around Covent Garden. It was really nice as it wasn't raining and wasn't that cold.  We had a macaroon from Laduree, we went inside the Royal Opera House to see if there were tickets left (there were but the most expensive ones), we found Cath Kingston shop.

29 November

First of all, we had breakfast at the hotel.  English breakfast.  I had porridge, some toasts, sausages, bacon and eggs. And coffee. My sister did have tea.

This day we went shopping for the most part.  It was not our intention but we did found lots of nice things.  In the morning we went to Regent Street.  In Hamleys we bought two very pretty and tiny soft dogs for my niece and newphew.  At Liberty I went to see all Rowan yarns, bottoms and everything they have to knit, sew ... etc.  I must say that last year after visiting this part of Liberty was when I started knitting again.  They have such beautifuls yarn.  All those colours.  Next stop before lunch was John Lewis.  I have read in internet that they have a nice selection of yarns, fabrics, needles ... so I made sure to visit it.  I was not disappointed at what I found.  They have such a big selection of everything you might need to sew, crochet and knit.  My sister visited the Christmas decoration section and she was amazed as well.  We had never visit John Lewis before but now is in our list for other trips.

We didn't have lunch, we did have tea at Harrods. It is at 3 pm.  Usually it is better to make a reservation but being a Thusday we didn't have any trouble.  This is not the first time we have tea there.  I still remember the first time we went that we were surprise because people didn't finish the small cakes at the top the the tray.  Now we know.  Once you get to the top tray you are already full and cannot eat anymore.  I love sconnes with cream and jam.  Sandwich are good to but I missed the cucumber one and the egg one this time.  If anyone doesn't know it, you can ask for more sandwiches or more scones.

Our next stop after Harrods was Hyde Park.  My sister had read that this year Winter Wonderland was bigger that years before.  It sure was.  A big Christmas market, lots of places to eat, quite few attractions and I must say lots of people.  I cannot imagine what it must be like on a weekend.

30th November

Bath  (next post)

1st December

In the morning we went to Oxford Street.  We visited Selfridge and John Lewis.  In the afternoon we went to Borough Market.  It was quite nice to see it with not so many people as on a Saturday.  I bought some jams, once with Rubard and the other with dawson.  You cannot find both fruits here in Málaga.  On the way back we stopped in Modern Tate to have tea and something to eat. We went to the restaurant in 7th stock. It was already dark outside and the view from there was incredible.  St. Paul and all office buildings were light up.  The weather by then was not nice at all as it was raining.  Anyway we went back to Trafalgar Square to see the lights in the Christmas tree and then around Seven Dials area.

2nd December

First of all we checked out from hotel and I had a few words with one of the receptionist as I couldn't sleep the night before, because there was a party in the hotel and I had to hear loud music until it finished at one o'clock in the morning !!.

Then we went to visit Westminster Abbey. It is the first time I visited it.  Everytime I tried to visit it I couldn't because of the long queue.  This time we made sure to go early and we had no trouble at all. I liked it but was surprise at how many tombs are inside the church.  Returning from Westminster Abbey we got to see the Changing of the guards by chance.  We had some lunch in National Gallery Cafe.  It was quite nice eating there.  I had some stew, some bread and a lemon tart, all delicious and not too expensive.

After eating, it was time to take our luggage from hotel and go to the airport.  We had some delays on the train towards Gatwick Airport, and again once we were seating on the plane we had to wait a bit too.  It is amazing some people who jumped the queue when we were boarding the plane, one girl told me that the queue was not well done and she didn't know where to go, so as it was not clear enough for her (the queue was a long one) it was OK to jump it. Increadible !!

Apart from this last incidents the trip was quite allright.  I still find London and Great Britain quite amazing.  I love buildings, parks, museum and of course, shops.  I don't know if I will go back.  I am finding myself quite tired and bored with travels arrangements.   And the other thing is that, because I don't spend as much time as I would like at home I always look foward to staying home doing things I like most such as cooking, doing some crochet and enjoying and resting in general.  I must be getting old, and no, it doesn't bother me at all.  As they say:  No place like home.

I'm back !!.  I've been in London for a couple of days.  It was good but it could have been better.  My suitcase is really heavy and my current account is much lighter.  This pictures were taken this morning.
